Temporary Closure

Due to flooding damage, the Markham Centennial Centre gym is closed while they preform repairs on the floor. We will update this website when the floor has been repaired.

While we don’t have a tentative date when we will return, we’re hoping the gym will be ready again by mid-October 2023.

Further updates will be announced as we learn more.

Wednesday Classes Cancelled Until September 28, 2022

A reminder to all Markham Kendo Club students that Wednesday sessions are cancelled while the City or Markham renovates Armadale Community Centre. Tsuji Sensei will try to find an alternate location for kata practice and will inform the group on the Whatsapp group if a place becomes available. Wednesday classes will restart on September 28th.

Sunday classes will continue as usual at Markham Centennial Community Centre.

Kendo Ontario – Team Canada Practice 2020

To the Kendo Community,

One of Team Canada’s goals is to give back to the community and share some of the training techniques with members of the general Kendo community.

To support such, Team Canada is hosting special practices every second Friday at the JCCC Kendo Club from 7:30 ~ 9:30 p.m.

These practices are open to all bogu members of the Kendo community.

We especially encourage aspiring junior members to participate so they can begin their competitive training at an early age.

The plan is to have advanced attendees practice with the Team Canada prospects while less experienced or younger members follow the same instruction but practice among themselves in a separate group managed by a Team Canada associate coach.

The format is subject to change based on the quantity and ability of the participants on that particular day.

The first practice starts this Friday, February 14th and continues every second Friday.

Kendo Ontario Shinpan/Referee Seminar

On Saturday February 22, 2020, Kendo Ontario will hold a Shinpan / Referee Seminar led by David Mori Sensei at the University of Toronto – Upper Gym starting at 1:00 p.m. All players 3rd Dan and Up are invited to participate. This seminar is beneficial for all members who compete as well as referee at Kendo tournaments.

We invite all 2 Dan Kendo players to come out and participate as players to improve their own shiai skills. The seminar will be followed by Godo Keiko and is expected to finish before 5:00 p.m.

As there will be several upcoming events that require Shinpan / Referee (University of Toronto Sr. Tournament on Sat., March 14 and JCCC Jr. Tournament on Sun., April 26), we encourage all qualified members to participate.

Cost

A seminar fee of $10 per shinpan participant to support Kendo Ontario is requested. Shiai players (2nd Dan) and members participating in the Godokeiko only do not pay this fee.

Requirements

All participants are reminded to bring their own Shinpan-ki (pair of red and white Shinpan flags) if possible and read and bring a copy of the FIK (International Kendo Federation) booklet – The Regulations of Kendo Shiai and Shinpan.

*** Kendo Ontario will be selling copies of the booklet @ $15. Quantities are limited. Please indicate in the registration form.

Deadline

We ask that a club / dojo representative send the completed registration form (available online here) to [email protected] by Wed., Feb. 12, 2020 (end of day).
